Damp and wet environment / condensation / cleaning

How does water get into rolling bearings

  • due to the weather for outdoor applications
  • due to condensation during temperature changes, e.g. day/night
  • from seawater spray on ships and in harbour facilities
  • due to process water during production
  • by cleaning with spray water and high-pressure cleaners

Seals

To prevent water from entering the bearing, the seal design must be adapted accordingly. With seals integrated in the bearing, the availability of special seals is rather low.

Integrated seals

  • Z – Cover; non-slip, a gap remains between seal and bearing ring, stable against deformation – not suitable for use in damp environments.
  • RS – Elastomer seals; sliding on the bearing ring, single or multi-lip depending on the design. These seals are suitable for use in damp environments; depending on the preload, the sealing effect increases, as does the frictional torque of the seal. There is a myriad of designations and variants from the various manufacturers (DU / LU / LB / V/ E / RS1 / RSR / RSH / RSL / etc.). Elastomer seals are relatively sensitive to the effects of external forces. For example, the seals bend during cleaning with high-pressure equipment and the washing water is flushed into the bearing (these seals are supported by filling with DUROLUB DL)
  • In addition to simple seals, multi-lip seals are also available for radial insert ball bearings (Y-bearings), optionally with flinger discs, which in turn can be sealed multiple times. Radial insert ball bearings are therefore ideal for creating the most effective seals against water and dirt.

External additional seals

In addition to the standardised solutions, gaskets in any dimensions and various materials can be produced at short notice. Please contact us for more information.

Lubrication

Water in lubricating greases inevitably leads to a reduction in the performance of the lubricant, higher wear, higher operating temperatures and corrosion in the bearing.

The service life is greatly reduced, and the bearings fail prematurely – often after just a few hours.

There are different solutions depending on the application

  • Water-resistant greases based on special calcium soap or calcium complex soap and mineral base oils or synthetic hydrocarbons (DUROLUB G)
  • DUROLUB DL as non-washable polymer matrix Lubrication
  • Increase the amount of grease in the store and fill all free spaces
